Halloween 2012 -- Harry Potter, his owl Hedwig (and a monster).
Of note:
- We trick-or-treated. They lasted longer than last year. Bonus: no rain!
- We peeked into lots of fancy foyers at our neighbors' houses. Please tell me we're not the only ones who do this while trick-or-treating.
- Both of our hand-me-down costume ideas (you know that's how we like to roll) didn't pan out for either of the big kids, so we found something we had in the dress up bench (HP robe) and went from there.
- Nathan has only just learned that HP is a child wizard. Which makes him way cooler. (He's only seen snippets of the first movie; before this week his main concept of Harry Potter came from a lego sticker book.)
- Anneliese thinks the owl Hedwig's name is Heglig.
- In a fit of crafty confidence, I decided to make that owl costume (post for another day).
- Remember Anneliese in that monster costume?
- Poor third child Charlotte isn't exactly an afterthought, but still didn't get to go with the "theme" ... clearly she was troubled by this (or not at all).
- No, we did not actually feed her a snickers bar. (That thing is full-sized! We totes ate it ourselves. Everyone knows the full-size candy is for the parents.)
Happy Halloween!!

Updates, Two Types
BORING HEALTH UPDATES
1.) My eyeball is better. All those fancy drops seem to have done the trick. I can wear my contacts again in a month, if I feel like it.
2.) Anneliese's tooth is working its way back down. Slowly, but the follow-up xray showed progress. Still hoping to avoid a surgical extraction but if it looks like it will come to that, it will happen before the year is out because we have already met our max out-of-pocket (like, a laughably long time ago... again with the very. medical. year.) so... yeah.
In related news, she's an old pro at the dentist now. And her favorite days are rainy days because Marmie sent rainbow boots for her birthday, and she might or might not be obsessed.
3.) We are feeding Charlotte some simple foods. Fruits and veggies and puffs and crackers. It's going... okay. It is hard not to feel worried and complicated. That's really all I have to say about it for now.
MORE INTERESTING (VANITY) UPDATES
1.) Last week I was having an awesome hair day so I threw on my new favorite scarf (I can't quit it and I have no shame) and grabbed a cell phone selfie so I could update my facebook and twitter profile pic to something that looks more like how I look these days:
2.) But then promptly went to a new hair color the next day:
And I'm pretty much too lazy to change my profile pic again.
3.) Mark came home from work the other night with my long-coveted splurge bag. In custom colors. And now it makes me happier than it probably should, every time I carry it around.
And that is some of what's new around here while I've been a blogging slacker.

Bloody Brokenhearted
Earlier this week, Mark went to donate blood at church and took Nathan along with him. Anneliese, not understanding that the reason she couldn't go had everything to do with her age (and toddler unpredictability in a medical space) and nothing to do with how quickly or not quickly she could get dressed and ready, was left half-socked and sobbing, watching them drive away.
I know there is something kind of wrong about taking a picture of your upset child, but her sadness was so sweet at the same time. So I did.
Don't worry, we snuggled a lot while they were gone.
You don't need both socks all the way on for snuggling, after all.

Three Way Thumbs
I looked in the backseat the other day and saw this:
Yup, all three of our children share a common vice.
(And yes, that's all the kids, across the backseat of Mark's car... barely fits.)

Playground Party
Last weekend, on Anneliese's birthday afternoon, we had a little celebration for her at a playground near our house. In these parts, we generally subscribe to a "playdate with cake" goal for birthday parties, and it ended up being the perfect thing for Anneliese. Her first party she could understand and remember, and she loved it. Was so so happy.
We had made a cake together, strawberry cake with strawberry frosting and strawberries on top (this, from a child who used to not like strawberries) (Daniel Tiger loves strawberries so strawberries are kind of a big deal in our house right now) and I have to say, it was pretty freaking delicious. Strawberry cake might be the most under-appreciated of all the cakes. It was tasty and pink and basically a win.
We had three of her school/church friends come to play, and they each brought siblings (and parents! we're not crazy), so all together we had eleven kids (three were babies about Charlotte's age), which means... yeah we were glad to be at a playground and not our house.
The children ran and played, then we sang to Anneliese (she sang to herself too, naturally) and ate cake, then we gave her her birthday present (a bike!), then we went home.
Sweet and easy and she loved it. I haven't seen her so happy in weeks. She has been counting down to her birthday, basically since Nathan's and Charlotte's a few months ago, and at her party she basked in the attention and fun. Drank it in.
Like a birthday girl should.

Nathans in Robes
{Holy blogging lag, batman. I'm behind but getting caught up. I will proceed to be extra witty and cute now, to make up for the recent quiet. Or something.}
The morning after Anneliese's birthday, Nathan made his debut singing in worship with the children's choirs at church. He has sung with his classes in school chapel several times, but never in big church. On a Sunday. Wearing the longed-for big kid red robe. (A real robe! Like mommy singing, and daddy ringing, and Another Nathan conducting!) (He might have talked about it a little.)
He was so sweet and excited, I had to take a picture. My two favorite Nathans, in their robes.
The children sounded lovely (watch/listen here), and afterwards he wore his robe home in the car and then didn't want to put it in the closet, but instead hang it on his desk chair where he could see it. (We compromised. It's in the closet. Which is totally a compromise if you call it a compromise. And point out he can just open the door if he wants to look at it. I mean, right?)
Basically he's high on church and high on choir and that makes me want to sing for joy myself.

Happy Birthday, Anneliese!
Baby Anneliese is three years old today! And she's grown up so much in the last year!
I can hardly believe that just a year ago, she was a little baby toddler and now she's a... well, a kid. A sweet little girl. Whoa.
(If you can't see the embedded video, click here to watch it on YouTube.)
(And you can re-live Anneliese's first and second years too, if you want!)
Oh Anneliese, we love you so much and we love seeing you grow up. Happy happy birthday, little lady.

Awesome not Awkward
True story: when I saw the kids sitting on the floor together, I busted out a camera mostly hoping for something hilariously awkward I could laugh about on the internet. (Look what blogging has done to me.) (Yes, I am blaming blogging for it.)
But then they all looked right at the camera. And smiled. And sat still. And were sweet.
And it turns out awesome is just as good as awkward. Maybe better. Maybe.

Eyeball Ulcers: Actually a Thing
Hey in case anybody wasn't updated by three hundred of their closest facebook friends, today is 10/11/12 WHOA STARTLING (read: I do not care as much as facebook wants me to). But, happy fun-number-date-day anyway? Okay then.
So the big drama of the week (because it's always something, yknow) is that I've got some cray cray up in my eye. It went pretty rapidly from kinda hurting and itching to holy mother of God my left eyeball is five times the size of my right one and there's not enough room in my head for it!
(It didn't literally grow, y'all. I don't think that can happen. That's just how it felt.) But legitimately, I couldn't keep my eye open or see out of it or tolerate almost any light (even from just my phone! travesty!) and it was very very very painful.
My butthurt of an eye doctor's office was sort of iffy and put out and vague about maybe calling me back in a few hours if they could work me in and I was all NO NOT GOOD ENOUGH so I called an urgent care to see if they would see me (um notsomuch) and then finally sheepishly called Nathan's eye doctor, since we liked him well enough when we were there this summer. And I'm so glad I did. His people were kind and accommodating and were glad to take me as a new patient even under the circumstances, and y'all! It kind of restores my faith in the medical world when I remember that some people really are in it not for the science or the prestige or the money, or maybe yes to those things but mostly because they want to be healers. Like for real. It's cheesy but true. This is one of those doctors. He oozes intelligence and creativity and compassion.
(In related news, I totally have a new eye doctor now.)
ANYWAY. The point of this (I know you're ready for me to get there) is that I have iritis and fairly bad corneal ulcers. Yes, ulcers on my eyeball. Apparently this is really a thing. Maybe everyone else already knew? I didn't. The good news is it's only that (ha), seemingly not caused by anything bigger or Really Scary, but the bad news is corneal ulcers are still no joke. So I have basically been doing antibiotic and steroid eye drops round the clock since Tuesday, which isn't my favorite, but! I can open my eye! I can see! So it's all good.
Hey ever wondered whatthree four hundred dollars worth of eye drops looks like?
Now you know. Tiny! (It's adorable that we met our out-of-pocket limit waaaaaaay back in like February, right? It's been a Very Medical Year.)
Hey also, want to hear something weird? When you put drops in your eyes, you taste them five minutes later. In your mouth. I mean, I know all the mess in your head is connected but this continues to freak me out. (Exactly every two hours, in case you were curious.)
Hey also, want to see something weird? You know you do.
One of my ointments makes my tears yellow. Like #nofilter yellow.
I told you, my eye gots the cray.

Half a Charlotte
Charlotte has pretty much abandoned the belly scoot in favor of a real all-fours crawl, which she's become pretty speedy about. And once she's up on her feet hanging onto the furniture, she's a speedy cruiser too.
She always looks so sweet and happy, exploring the house from her new perspective... but she moves so fast I can't ever get a good picture.
So, here's half of a good picture.
You're welcome.

Anneliese at Almost Three
October 7th. One of the due dates I never forget. Three years ago today, Anneliese was still Beanie, waiting to make her appearance. Now she's a walking talking bundle of middle-child personality.
I think I have said (more than) enough on the struggles of our almost-three-year-old last week, so now I will say this: she is having a much much better week, currently things don't seem quite as overwhelming as they sometimes do, and it's getting easier to remind myself that this just is a difficult stage that will pass.
And in the meantime there are some pretty awesome things going on too. Here are some of the best:
1.) She's funny. Anneliese is an outgoing chatterbox with an adorable perspective on the world. Oh, the sweet things she says when she has the time an attention to just... ramble. She will start conversations with new people, confident that others want to hear what she has to say (they do). She makes up songs (scarf scarf scarf, pink scarf purple scarf pink purple scarf) and is confident that we want to hear them (ummm). She tells us who she wants to be to be on any given day (a fishie! a princess! a tiny t-rex!) and then follows up with a series of look what I can do! while she showing us how whatever she's pretending to be would interact with the world.
2.) She's oddly (and defiantly) optimistic. She might pitch fits, but she turns around of them pretty easily. There's always something to be happy about. Just having new socks to wear will keep her cheerful for half a day. It's the small things, right Anneliese? And when she does things that are not allowed, she quickly points out that... it's fine. I woke up and it's still nighttime, but it's fine. Or, I ate this cookie for breakfast but it's fine. Or, I put my shirt in the potty but it's fine. (It's not always fine with me, but I have to admire her perspective. I think?) Even when things go wrong, she's a generally cheerful kid.
3.) She takes care of people. Carrying bottles and diaper bags for me, getting cups of water for Nathan, scooping out dog food for Bowden. Sure, shesometimes always hugs Charlotte too hard. Sure, sometimes her buckle buckle mommy! when we get in the car comes across as naggy. But it's all done out of love. She will also gladly de-stem hundreds of grapes for school snacks, or fetch toys for her siblings, or kiss someone who's crying. She is never more delightful than when she's proudly taking care of someone she cares about.
4.) She's affectionate. She loves to sit close and snuggle. She races up with hugs and kisses when she sees someone she loves. And there is no one, no one, that she doesn't like to pray for. Bedtimes are a litany of people and things she has ever ever encountered, and giving thanks for them. She is generous with affection, this one.
5.) She's beautifully independent. She is determined to do things on her own, to learn new things, to try new things. She can dress herself (most days even without being asked) and take herself to the potty (and complains when we want to check up on her wiping, which is still necessary, no matter what she thinks). She gets her own snacks, chooses her own games, and (kind of) puts her own clothes in the right drawers. She can almost buckle her own seatbelt and walk herself to her preschool class. She's so much more independent than Nathan was at this age, partly because I probably babied him more than I needed to, but also because unlike him, she can't stand being babied. I love seeing her fierce little personality come out. She's strong. It's one of the best things about her.
You challenge us and delight us, Anneliese, and it's fun seeing the spirited sunny girl you're becoming. We love you so much. So, so much. Happy almost-three, baby Beanie.

Random in the Car
Nathan's new favorite word is random. He throws it around to describe all manner of things that are not, in fact, random. Such as the taste of his yogurt. Or the color of his shirt.
We do, however, have some seemingly (to me) random conversations on the way home from school.
"Mommy, what happens when Monday is over? Where does it go until it comes again next week? Does God take Monday away?"
"Can we go to the museum again soon? Why don't you ever want to take me to the museum? Are you scared of the bees and bugs? You don't have to be scared of pretend bees. If you're scared just be scared of real. REAL. Okay mom? The ones at the museum aren't real. They're freezed statues. Just like when you put something in a freezer, like that. It's freezed. But usually statues aren't in freezers actually."
Um... okay?
Also, both Nathan and Anneliese have triplets in their classes this year (?!) so suddenly we are obsessed with all things tripletty in these parts.
N: Me and Anneliese and Charlotte are triplets like {school friends} right?
me: Well triplets do have the same mommy but they're also all the same age, so no, you and your sisters aren't triplets.
N: Are those three vans triplets?
me: Um no... vans don't have mommies (?)
A: Those dogs are triplets! Those dogs right there! Right there mommy mommy mommy!
me: They aren't the same kind of dog. And there are only two. Triplets means three.
A: Yes mommy yes! I'm just 'tending they're triplets! It's my choices!
me: Okay sweetie that's fine. *eyeroll* *sigh*
N: Are you and Daddy and Another Nathan triplets?
me: Uh even less like triplets than you and your sisters. Who wants to talk about anything else?
(Side note: the triplets in Anneliese's class are all boys and they are dressed exactly alike, every time I see them. Because clearly their mom hates the teacher?)
(Another side note: some days Nathan just totally looks like a kindergartner and it freaks me out a bit.)
True story, kiddo: sometimes random conversations do make me scared of real.

Thursday Miscellany
Eight quick takes:
1. I thought that turning Charlotte around in her car seat would help me keep her awake during our 1pm car rides to get Nathan from school. Um, it has not. (These dozes regularly ruin afternoon naptime, in case you were curious.)
2. Nathan has started packing his own lunch for school. He climbs up on a stool, makes a sandwich or bagel, gets some grapes or string cheese or applesauce or whatever else he wants to bring, fills his water bottle, and always remembers an icepak from the freezer, a spoon from the drawer, and exactly half a paper towel. He is either a control freak or he's stumbling into newfound independence (if it's the former, don't tell me). And I am either a really terrible mommy or a really awesome one (if it's the former, don't tell me).
3. I got new glasses. Tell me they are cute and trendy.
4. We got the fliers for this year's Awkward School Photos. Oh goody, now they come with a fake magazine cover. Something I've always never wanted or needed! And even if it were a good idea (it isn't), this one isn't even well done. Laugh at it with me, please.
5. Are y'all watching Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood yet? It's the newest incarnation of Mister Rogers, a re-imagining of his land of make-believe. It's sweet and smart and it will bring back memories. Tell your kids and tell your DVRs. I wouldn't lead you wrong on this, friends. Daniel Tiger is where it's at.
6. After a string of hard weeks, Anneliese is suddenly having a good one. She's sweet and kind and helpful and, well, delightful. If it manifests like this, I'm happy for her to make a liar out what I told the internet last week.
7. For anyone keeping score at home, it's been three-plus weeks and Mulch Mountain is indeed still standing strong in our front yard. Oh and it's still steaming. I don't care how much heat is generated from the wood-chipping process... that ain't right. Our mulch is creeping me out, y'all.
8. We bought our house again yesterday. Yay?
