Happy 10th Birthday, Anneliese!

Welp, the middlest baby has made it to double digits. Happy birthday, Anneliese! Ten years old!!

We have spent the last two weeks traveling around Germany and the Netherlands, and I kept looking around having a hard time believing that the tiny baby I held for the first time 10 years ago, is now a poised mature big kid going on adventures and world traveling.

It's hard to grasp how much time changes, from those diaper and toddler years, to these adventure years, yknow? I'm not mad about it, but it also makes me nostalgic and missing the baby years, even though I don't actually miss them miss them, and wouldn't actually trade them for what we have now.

But, yeah. Ten years old. That was fast.

We are jet-lagged and travel weary, and my feelings are ajumble and hard to articulate, but here's a glimpse of Anneliese at ten.

She's (usually) reserved, except when she's being silly or photobombing. She remains a daydreamer and a big-picture dreamer. She is observant, and notices and remembers things that sometimes surprise me for her age. She is kind, she is remarkably patient, and she loves feeling helpful. She's very sensitive, which comes with a handful of "drama" sometimes (for lack of a better word), but she's also resilient when she needs to be, and handles herself better than many kids when it comes to new or unknown things. She's sometimes nervous to try something she's uncertain about (like anyone), but then... she tries anyway. In some ways I find that even braver than being a brazen fearless daredevil, if that makes sense.

She loves sleep, spaghetti, rainbows, pretty pens and paper, being tall, playing her violin, reading, long showers, fun shoes, slime, Harry Potter (she wants me to say she's a clever and creative Ravenclaw), swimming, kicking the soccer ball or trampolining outside, audiobooks, roller-skating, Starbucks, boogie-boarding at the beach, babies (especially her cousins), crafting, singing, cute bags and pouches, warm soft blankets, water slides and roller coasters, running errands (yes really), and baking/cooking projects. She also adores her siblings but not on days when they drive her bonkers, she says. :)

She hates most potatoes, being rushed, and getting up early. She stresses and worries about sickness and not being able to be successful at things (both are mostly unfounded in her case, but anxiousness is anxiousness amirite). She only likes snuggling when it involves being near you but notsomuch touching you, except in the case of back scratching, which she, like her siblings, will always happily demand accept (no idea where they get that). She dislikes chores, too much sports talk, walks/hikes/worship services that take too long, being cold, wearing dresses to non-church events, and when people are too casual about single-use plastics, which she would like you to know are ruining the planet.

She hovers on the line between liking and only-tolerating school, but is a pretty dang good student. Not quick, but thoughtful and accurate and patient. Plus, her friends are there, and so is orchestra, as well as her art and drama clubs. (She is much too giggly to ever be a theater star, her feigned anger and seriousness is laughably... not that; but she does love to try.)

We are so proud to know her and love her, and lucky to raise her, and we thank God for her every day. Happy birthday, baby Beanie. Ten years old!!!

Three Somethings Cheerful (And A Bonus 1990s Mark/Erin Story)

Look, I can be cheerful. Three times, even! Ready?

1.) Anneliese sang in chapel choir again last week. She was as adorable and delighted as the first time.

And what's sweeter than a choir full of four-year-olds anyway?

Anneliese is tall* so in the back row, to the right.

*Side story: one of Mark's first memories of interacting with me was when we were taking some group picture for school (band! fine! it was for band! we were at BAND CAMP okay?) and they told us to stand by height and I hopped up into the back row, because apparently part of my self-image is that I am tall? And apparently I am actually... not that tall? (I feeeeeeel like I am tall.)

So anyway Mark watched as they moved me down a row and then down another and then apparently it happened again (!) later in the school year and he kept wanting to yell at me (in his best Seinfeld-to-George "you're bald" voice): YOU ARE AVERAGE! But he didn't, because he is Mark, and that is just not a very Mark thing to do. But! He does like to bring up this story every time I mention that I am tall, which is apparently still fairly often. Because I am! I mean, not a giant! But fairly tall! Really!

2.) Charlotte has a new purple peacoat. In my opinion (as the shopper), it is perfection.

3.) Nathan was telling me some story the other night about something that happened at a Boeing parts factory (I don't even know) and he thought it was the best most hilarious mishap ever, and even though the story was actually suuuuper boring, his perfect smile and giggling about it enchanted me anyway.
lampshade on head?

I'm glad I got a picture though so I never have to get him to tell me that story again though. Yawn.

(Y'all hush, I am a good mom, take a seat and stop clutching your pearls.)

Daily Anneliese: FaceTime Version

Nathan and I have been having a lovely week at Montreat.  The girls have been with my dad for most of it, but they are home now with Mark and we got to video call them this afternoon. Nathan and Anneliese were SO sweet and chatty that I had to take a screen grab of my phone to post.

They haven't seen each other in weeks and weeks and their smiles and giggles totally fueled some happy energy into my afternoon.

Love these two so much. Can't wait to see them reunited in a few days.

Thumbs Up

I have a million pictures of Anneliese where she looks like she is giving an awkward thumbs up, but it's actually that she's just plucked her thumb from her mouth to grin at the camera, and it's still hanging mid-air.

So there's your random middlest-baby-makes-you-smile anecdote for the day.

(Also let's all take a moment to praise Marky, who, like yours truly, is totally an expert in the selfie art of looking at the dot.)

Daily Goettsch, December Edition with a Lost Tooth

This is how you blog when you're in a December frenzy: already-shared happy moments from the month!

Gray days have nothing on Anneliese.

Charlotte apparently thinks my driving needs a two-handed ridealong grip. Okay kid. Okay now.

And Nathan finally lost his first tooth! (Confession: we barely knew it was loose.)

He has been waiting for this since halfway through last school year, and finally he joins the ranks of his friends with a hole in his mouth and a matching lisp which makes me both happy and sad at the same time. We have had a rough weekend with this one, but glad for his moment tonight and ready to start fresh tomorrow. Parenting, man.

Anneliese and Hattie, 2gether 4ever

Here is a thing that keeps making me smile.

Your daily Anneliese

Lest you think Anneliese's Hattie loyalty has waned with age, or with new toys, you should know that this little frog is still the most beloved animal of the menagerie. She gets a little flatter with every night Anneliese sleeps flopped on top of her. And a little dingier with every wash-this-oatmeal-off that brings her to the laundry room. But she is the only one special enough for matching outfits.

Grins, all around.

A Couple of My Favorite Smiles

Another Nathan and I took the kids for a weekday holiday pancake lunch, a Christmas-break tradition we revisited from last year. Nathan is a little stomach-buggy (again! this will never end!) and I was on the mend from a rough mental-health night. So while all was not peaches, there's was this:

Yknow, just a couple of my favorite smiles.

A Pink Donut with Sprinkles

Anneliese has become accustomed to the occasional donut after the gym.

I totally get it.

Picture Face, Revisited

Recently Anneliese has started doing THIS when we take pictures of her:

Why? I... have no idea. Is she trying to improve her picture face and be funny like mommy? Maybe. Or are we making this face at her when we take the picture? (Hmmm that seems likely, actually.)

Either way, it makes me laugh.

Bloody Brokenhearted

Earlier this week, Mark went to donate blood at church and took Nathan along with him. Anneliese, not understanding that the reason she couldn't go had everything to do with her age (and toddler unpredictability in a medical space) and nothing to do with how quickly or not quickly she could get dressed and ready, was left half-socked and sobbing, watching them drive away.

Your daily Anneliese

I know there is something kind of wrong about taking a picture of your upset child, but her sadness was so sweet at the same time. So I did.

Don't worry, we snuggled a lot while they were gone.

You don't need both socks all the way on for snuggling, after all.

Three Way Thumbs

I looked in the backseat the other day and saw this:

Yup, all three of our children share a common vice.

(And yes, that's all the kids, across the backseat of Mark's car... barely fits.)

Selfies With Kiddies

In case anyone is curious, I still can't quit the inward-facing camera on my new phone. The kids are fully on board too.

(I would be embarrassed for anyone to see exactly how much of this type of thing actually exists in my camera roll. Don't judge.)

Anneliese Agrees

I don't know if you've heard, but neon is having a momentAnneliese totally agrees.

*Thanks for letting me play with your goggles, Annie!

I Missed This Girl

My dad brought Nathan and Anneliese back on Wednesday afternoon, and I am so glad to have them home.  My Charcation was nice (awesome actually) but my house really is too quiet without all my babies. Anneliese especially is such a loud presence. At its worst, that means fits and tantrums and general grandparent withdrawal (has anyone said no to her in a week?  I'm not sure), but at its best, it is contagiously joyful.

Withdrawal symptoms and tantrums aside, I totally missed this sweet cheerful face.

Now it's just the kids and me for the rest of the week until Mark gets home from his ASP trip. Solo parenting... readysetgo!

We Never Catch Them Sleeping Anymore

So when we do, we take pictures.

When I see them sleeping, they still look exactly like they did in my arms on the days they were born. Same mouths, same lashes, same perfect cheeks. I can't blink or it will turn them back into big kids. And they're definitely not big kids because they're still my tiny babies. And never more beautiful than when they're sleeping.  Well, maybe laughing. But sleeping is a close second. And right now this makes me want to freeze time.

Okay sappy mommy... out.

On a See-Saw, Grinning

We are headed to Charleston for my cousin Meredith's wedding this weekend. Charlotte is coming with us, but Nathan and Anneliese are right back at Opa and Oma's house. Lots of boating and eating and swinging is in their future.

Your daily Anneliese

I'm assuming this kind of see-saw joy will be upon them again, soonest.

Brownie Batter Baby

Sometimes Anneliese likes to pretend she likes to help in the kitchen. But really, she doesn't.

She likes the apron part. And the being with mommy and brother part. But while Nathan will measure ingredients and read oven temperatures and count eggs and stir patiently before delving into his batter reward, Anneliese goes straight for the good stuff, no cooking effort attempted.

Your daily Anneliese

Ann-eese helping cooking too Mommy!

Um, okay sweetie. Notsomuch, but okay. Adorable wins.

I'm not sure quite what to say about this.

So, presented without further comment... your daily Anneliese.

Sunglasses in Winter, Duh Mom

My two budding fashionistas have suddenly decided, here in the dim of winter, that they need to wear sunglasses.  All the time.  On every car trip. Even when the shades are up in the car and it's not that bright.

I don't mind, really, but they frequently need help getting the arms on over their ears. And they frequently need help with this after I have started driving. (There is lots of eye rolling from the front of the car.)

And when I keep asking why the sudden interest, I get brilliant answers like:

- they match this shirt (Nathan)
- sungasses, yeah! (Anneliese)
- it's good to wear them (Nathan)
- sungasses do it self! (Anneliese)
- mommy, I just like to wear them (Nathan)
- SUNGASSES, YEEEEAH! (Anneliese)

*sigh*

Whatever. It makes them happy.
Your daily Nathan, and daily Anneliese: rockin the shades

And it is, after all, a cute fashion choice.  They're not wrong about that.
